There is something indistinct about the accident. We know now that we cannot return to the time before the sinking. The city I visited was where they lived, went to school, and moved through their days. Even after the accident, people continued to live there, and the city kept moving. What people tried to preserve, what they tried to erase, and what had already disappeared remained entangled in the same place. A disaster left unresolved stays with us for a long time. Yet not every landscape speaks of the accident. Some places bring that day back, while others pass by as though nothing had happened. Walking through Ansan, I collected scenes that had begun to look different from before. As lives that have passed are removed one by one, the landscape slowly tilts. It is difficult to know what remains and what disappears. Somewhere between ghosts and lingering emotions, how are we to remember this time? There are things that cannot be erased, no matter how much we try.
